Lights on Oregon: Campaign for Affordable and Responsible Energy

Another clean renewable power source long supported by many environmentalists is wave power, which harnesses the never-ending movement of the ocean and turns it into electricity.

On one hand… According to the Environmental Defense Fund’s website: “The potential of ocean energy is immense…the tides in just seven areas under consideration for ocean energy development in Puget Sound [Washington] could provide power for 70,000 homes…ocean energy could provide power for up to 10 percent of US households…energy from the ocean could take its place next to solar, wind, biomass and geothermal energy as a viable and productive clean energy resource."

Oregonians were supposed to have benefited from the Florence Wave Energy facility, which would have produced clean renewable energy for 15,000 local homes, with a scale-up potential to 100,000 homes. Each of the 10 units initially planned could have saved 10,000 tonnes of CO2 and 30 tonnes of SO2 from the atmosphere each year. Each unit would have had zero CO2 and SO2 produced, while noise emissions were targeted below 75db, the same noise level as an air conditioner.

Unfortunately, small fringe groups in Oregon have succeeded in stopping this environmentally friendly advancement.

But on the other hand… In 2007, the Oregon Surfrider Foundation filed a motion of intervention with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to oppose the Florence Wave Energy facility. According to their Mission Statement, “SURFRIDER is dedicated to enhancing wave-riding opportunities.” Affordable clean renewable energy for all Oregonians is not one of their priorities. Their opposition prevented this clean renewable energy resource from providing electricity for Oregonians, which in turn would have reduced the amount of greenhouse gas emission in Oregon. The group’s website proclaims, “For those who love surfing the south jetty…this news was a major victory!”
