Nuclear Power: Radical Environmentalists Can't Make Up Their Minds

Nuclear energy plants are the lowest cost producer of baseload electricity. The costs have decreased 30 percent in the past ten years. Nuclear energy is produced when nuclear chain reactions are steadily sustained and heat water to produce steam which is later converted to mechanical work to create electricity.

On one hand…According to the Environment Defense Fund’s website, the benefits of using nuclear energy include the reduction of emitting harmful carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. It states, “…nuclear power may one day have the potential to be a factor in slowing the emissions that contribute to global warming. For that reason, it is worth pursuing continued research.” The website also explained that, “The safety record in the United States has been impressive. Nuclear power has been providing about 20% of our electricity for decades with no significant release of radiation.”

Nuclear energy can prove to be a powerful alternative energy in Oregon just as it has been in France for decades. France’s 56 nuclear plants account for 76 percent of the nation’s energy while also exporting some of this energy to other European nations.

However, some radical environmentalists oppose nuclear energy.

But on the other hand… Members of the website “Blue Oregon”, a site for “progressive Oregonians”, oppose nuclear energy in Oregon because of what they view as a failure in the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant. Russell Sadler states, “No one is sure what the consequences will be if radioactive tritium reaches the Columbia and heads for the sea.” Although the Trojan plant provided 12 percent of Oregon’s energy while open, radicals still were able to prevent any more nuclear plants from being built.
